OH MAN the things I can say about this. The character is Kamio Misuzu from AIR.
When I drew the top image, I was in the starting of an extremely long art block. That CG was a miracle in itself because I didn't (couldn't?) CG much in 2006.
From 2007 to 2011, I didn't draw anything of substance, besides a short-lived 2 month attempt in 2009 with 3 or 4 complete drawings. And even then, they were mostly studies because my creative juices were dry.
In 2012, I began drawing again. But internally I keep beating myself over the fact that I didn't draw for 4 years, and what progress I could have made if I had kept drawing those years. And I was always under the impression that I drew the same as I did 4 years ago (and then feeling even worse.)
And then I discovered this meme! I thought it'd be a perfect opportunity to see, once and for all, the changes in these 6 years because my ego was problems accepting that I didn't improve all those years.
HOWEVER, I don't think this comparison is all that fair because I didn't put a lot of effort into it when I drew the top image, and I spent quite some time on the bottom one. Also the 2 styles are different, and while the bottom is more ~detailed~ and all that, there is a certain charm in the 2006 version that I couldn't capture with the 2012 semi-realism drawing.
But in general, I think I can settle on the fact that I've made some sort of progress forward and now my ego can stfu and allow me to keep drawing in peace. So, mission accomplished?
what i've noticed for so many people is that they begin off with mange-styled drawings and progressed to more cartooney or realistic. There's only so much you can do with mange- as much as i do love it.
So what if the second one is realistic ? thats awesome! I think people who are able to make their pictures look real are just amazing artist with an ability i admire!
This picture shows your amazing improvement in these years and i hope to see more of you beautiful art in the futur! Im looking forward to it ^^
It might just be your nostalgia about the 2006 image, but I think the 2012 image is better and has an essence not captured in the first one. I gotta tell you, I have seen other people not progress in six years the way you did and they just drew (and drew and drew) all that time. And looking from your gallery, you're still improving.
Don't beat yourself up about the past; there's nothing you nor anybody can do to change it. (I know this post is almost a year old, so you might not still be in this frame of mind.)
Thanks so much for this thoughtful comment, I saw it early in the morning and it made the rest of my day. You're right, there is no use lingering on the "what if I had done this" thoughts as they're counter productive and doesn't change anything. Luckily I have mostly moved on from thinking like that, and really making an effort to improve. (I'm glad it shows!)
Hopefully the next time I do a comparison image I'll have a much better and inspiring story with it.

Keep it up and good things.

I'm so original.
